Reflecting on the different assessment I have implemented

During my teaching practice, I have tried very hard to implement different formative and summative assessment. In the beginning, I thought that it will be hard for me but as the days go it became easier especially I had an MST who takes these assessments seriously. I discussed with my teacher the different formative and summative assessments that I was planning to do with class. She gave me feedback on the questions and how to do it for ensuring that the students understand what they are doing in the classroom.

Doing a different kind of the formative assessment helped to monitor the students’ progress. It helped to see what the students understand from the lesson in a fun way for them. Implementing this assessment before, during and after the lesson showed where I can start with students and if they need and extra time for the lesson or the outcomes. The formative assessment helped the students to be engaged in the lesson. For example, in one of my lessons about the insects, I had a long opening so I asked the students to stand up and we did the four corners it was engaging as well as it was useful for me to see what the students understand from my lesson.

On the other hand, summative assessment helped to see and evaluate the students on their understanding of the outcome. It showed whether I need to give an extra lesson to teach the specific outcomes. I did many kinds of summative assessment the written and the verbal. I used these kinds to make sure that the students are able to tell what they learned. When I did an assessment about the pattern I did both verbal and written assessment I gave the students a paper to make the patterns. The other one I asked the students questions about the different pattern in the stick. I asked them to tell if the pattern is correct or not and why. Doing these both pattern assessment showed me that student can be smart even though they don’t say anything. When I did the shape assessment, it was easy for the students and most of them were in master level. Therefore, to make sure that they understand the different 2D and 3D shapes I gave them another paper for identifying 2D and 3D shapes. Summative assessment really helped me to see the students’ level and how I can help them and the way that I can adjust my lesson to suit the students’ levels.
